Why am I pushing it?

  1. Hi all, I’ve been playing golf for about 6 years now. I’ve made some vast improvements and am really starting to feel like a decent player. (That is if you count 85-90 decent). One problem I have really struggled with recently is pushing the ball to the right after almost every iron shot. It’s more randomized with the driver and 3W, but it is VERY consistent with my irons. What’s funny is that contact is fantastic, it sounds like a flush iron shot every time, just adjust the trajectory to go straight right. Just to clarify, I am NOT slicing the ball, just pushing it straight right. Is there a drill anyone could point me in the direction of? I’m pretty tired of hitting irons directly into the woods every time I hit the ball. Thank you everyone!

P.S. I am a right handed golfer, about 6’ 4” tall. Clubs are measured at correct length. Just thought this information would be pertinent.

a few thoughts for you, Wright.

    1. have you checked your alignment to be sure that you are hitting it where you are aimed? Try not only using alignment rods on the range, but also maybe a ball or something a bit in front of the ball on the correct line. If using on the course, stand behind the ball and pick out something on the grass in front of the ball and line up to that point.
    2. provided the alignment is correct, are you sure that your clubface is square to the target line at impact? You can have a solid sounding strike with an open face.
    3. schedule a lesson with a local PGA Pro. I'm sure he/she would get you squared up (no pun intended) in no time.

Hi Wright! First thing I would suggest is to get with a competent club fitter and check your dynamic lie angle. That can be one of the most important factors in start line of the ball, especially as loft increases. Keep in mind that a good fitter will also be able to reliably recognize whether your drawling with a fitting issue or a swing mechanics issue and advise you accordingly.

Could be anything causing the push.Just a thought; you might want to check the lie angle. If your irons are too flat they'll go a little right, regardless of contact.

Could be a number of things, but I am not qualified to give you advice that could be BAD, other than go see a PGA pro, who will give you GOOD advice and can solve it in a manner of minutes. That is what I do if I am having issues with my swing, tempo or alignment. Tim (PGA teaching pro) knows my swing better than I do.

Your not getting your hips open. I had this problem in past. A pro worked with me about wider stance for a while. The closer your feet are together the harder it is to open your hips to target.

I just had a lesson and my instructor he said my club face was open at contact. I would suggest you see a golf instructor to get this "ironed out."

My push took me years to get rid off but in the end, at least for me, all it took was after getting into my stance, I rotate my left foot about 15 degrees open. This helps me initiate the turn. Simple but effective. I now have a dead pull as my current miss.

Found this...Seems to be the most common error is with set up.

Try moving the ball slightly forward. It might give you a little more time for the club to square up.

Jerry's suggestion from Dallas Texas. Seems logical to me.

Too many possibilities to even guess. It's a possible combination of things, or just one that's significantly causing you problems. A word of advice from a longtime student, ask around a little about teachers in the area, at a local golf shop or ask online about your specific area. FB usually has a group of avid contributors that will answer most questions. A good club fitter/teacher working together will get you on the right path. Good luck!
