  1. I recently purchased a 917 D2 driver and 917 F2 3W. After hitting 20 balls on the range, the club face had significant scratches on both clubs. Is this common with Titleist clubs? For $400 and $279 respectfully you would think the finish would be more durable. I am disappointed with the quality of the finish. Does anyone else have the same problem?

yes my 3 wood is all scratched up on the face as well. I think it's a finish issue but it doesn't effect playability

I have played my 917's for a season. Hit a lot of balls within both on the range and the course. The marks on the face are quite reasonable for the amount of balls that I have hit. Finish is quite respectable
  4. I do when the range balls are not new or clean. The range I practice at has a very poor wash procedure, so I use my old set of clubs (714/915/sm5) at the range, and newer clubs on the course. Dirty range balls are like hitting grit; it wears down the faces. Ymmv.

What condition were the range balls that you were hitting? The balls at some ranges are hard as rocks and can damage a face with only a few hits. I've cracked a face on the range before. Upload some pics of the face of the clubs on here so we can see the scratches.

If you are referring to marks on the sole of the club, that has a lot to do with the surface you are hitting from. If it has a lot of sand or very fine stones as most practice tees do, then I would expect to see marks on the sole of the club. Face marks can also happen when either or both the balls are not clean or you get some sand between the ball and the clubface. I hit a lot of balls and the faces and soles do get marked up a bit. It does not have any effect on the how the club plays.

Post a few pictures so that we can see what you are describing.

I have the 917D2 and have ZERO issues. Been playing it the last year and 1/2. I have scratches on the bottom but that's from me being a moron... on the top, nothing unless i hit it with something.. So not sure what you're doing at the range.

Not for nothing and IMO it can be dinged up all it wants as long as the performance is there..

The problem with hitting range balls is they have dirt on them. Its the dirt that impacts the face causing scratches. I've had cally and TM clubs that the same thing happens to. The TM had an unpainted face, and it developed scratches from the dirty balls. Just part of the pain that comes from practice at a range.

Here is a picture of my face as you can see the wear is pretty decent. It could be those crappy range balls I am using. LOL

BTW this 3 wood is as hot as anything out there. Don't let those cally commericals fool you with the jailbreak tech in the 3 woods this 917 was hotter, farther and more consistent than rouge.

I also have scratches on my hybrids and also on my 716 AP1 irons. I just assume it is the "hard as a rock" range balls.

Agree with all, range balls and sand on the mats or turf will scratch them up fast. For me, as long as the tops are clean, i'm good. When betting, beware of the golfer with worn equipment, he'll probably take your money.

It is most likely from the range balls...
  13. My golf club uses srxn range balls. They are a little hard but I make sure they are clean before I use them. If there is some dirt/sand on the balls I set those aside. I play 3-4 times a week and wonder what these will look like in a few months? I had a Cleveland Hi Bore driver and 3W in my bag for the last 10-12 years that does not show that kind of wear.

Wait... You have played the same driver and 3 wood for 12 years and it doesn't have any scratches??? Wow!

That looks like my 915fd fairway, you must hit a lot of range balls with it. I get a bag of range balls, dump them on the ground they pick up the sand used to dress the range when I rake them into be hit, I mostly notice this on my wedges.
