Unique things you do?

  1. Abby's post about golf bag organization got me thinking; do any of you put unique, "must have" items, in your golf bag? Most folks know the usual items, what are some un-usual items your bring with you on the course? How about unique habits when golfing? I feel like there must be some interesting items out there among you. For me, it is a pack of Lucky Strikes. I am not a smoker (which makes it un-usual), but when I play 18 I like to smoke a Lucky before the back 9. Interested to hear about your unique items/habits!

  2. Hot dog and orange gateraid on the turn are a must. Also, I keep a visor from my late grandmother in the bag. Never wear it or anything just keep it there for good luck.

I'm not a drinker either, but I like to carry a flask of good scotch in my bag. Hahaha!

The first step is admitting you have a problem. I do drink, and I love my Titleists!

I don't really have anything odd, but I am an overpreparer by nature and I tend to have WAY more stuff than I need in my bag. All golf items and healthy snacks.

    B.A,
    hahaha. Hey,
If you are not a drinker, I cant see the harm in it!
  6. LOL! If you play golf every day/week/month, does that make you a golfer? If you smoke every.... nevermind. Things that make you go "hmmm"!

I have a few items in my golf bag...one my lucky charms is a portion of a check that belonged to Ben Hogan...Kinda cool to have something in your bag that has a legends DNA on it.

Always have either a roulette chip from a casino I've been to, or a challenge coin from one of my former students or golfers that has been deployed. Also always some Advil, bug repellant, and extra pair of socks.

All great input on this. It is interesting to see what little things other folks do. The little things are as important to me as the game itself.

Great question Sam K. I always change my golf towel. I have quite a few from working at the same course for so long. And I must have a snack. And it must be sweet.

  14. Robert L,
I would consider an individual who has made a habit out of golf, a golfer. I would consider an individual who has made a habit out of smoking, a smoker. I only play a full 18 about 3 times per month (I play 9 multiple times per week). Given that I only smoke when I play 18, that equates to 1 pack every 6.666666667 months (generally speaking). Now if you were selling me life insurance, that might matter....

I am unique only because I am a minimalist. I carry a Titleist Sunday bag, two Pro V1's, a Titleist leather ball marker case, a TT bag tag, my car key, SPF 50 lip balm, two plastic tees, a small white towel, a score card, pencil and if the weather dictates, a wind breaker.

Very minimalist JAM! I like your approach (keeping it simple). Might give that a shot some time to reduce weight for a walking round

For some reason, I feel compelled to carry a summer's supply of balls in my bag.
One of my resolutions for next year is to fix that problem.

Not necessarily unique in WI, but a flask of Fireball and Deep Woods Cutter repellent are both mandatory, if not both at the same time. Warm and cold weather protection.

I always seem to lug around 3 dozen balls, and a couple hundred tees. For some reason, if I don't, all my tees break, and all my balls drown in the river!
In all seriousness (and I was only half joking, above) I carry an old 1960's Martini Tee (even though I like the wooden Pride Pros) for luck; the ubiquitous Crown Royal bag(s) for found and practice balls (and it reminds me of my Dad); an assortment of ball markers to match my mood; and a multi-tool, as you never know when you might need to play MacGuiver, open a bottle (wink), or rescue a damsel in distress.
Sometimes I'll throw a 1 or 2 iron, 9 wood, or my old Bulls-Eye putter in my bag, just to change things up, so I don't get too complacent. I try and have as much fun as possible, so I try to bring some intangible traits to the course, too, like a self depreciating sense of humor, courtesy, and respect for my fellow golfers, whether they're better or worse players than I. Being a gracious winner, or good loser, is part of the character of the game, and those intangibles count for a lot, too.

Cigars....I used to smoke a chruchill on the front and back nine. These days, one is enough, but it has to be earned by a birdie or consecutive pars. Lately, this has helped me keep the consumption down. Once the cooler weather lands here, a flask of Laphroaig 18 year old is quite useful.

Always a fresh glove in the pack (Titleist of course), a backup clean pair of socks, and most importantly, my first dog's puppy collar for a bit of good luck and a reminder to "keep having fun".
  26. Sam,

I carry beef jerky in my bag and every time I birdie a hole I grab a bite. Something fun and rewarding! In case you were wondering, an eagle deserves a whole large piece. :)

    Merry Christmas,
    Jack
  27. Great input from all on this. I loved reading about the unique things that make it fun for you. TT never disappoints on these subjects. It sounds like a stocked flask is the crowd favorite! Hope you all have a great week!

Chapstick! I always make sure I have some in the bag before hitting the course - especially if it's cold or windy, or both.

    Thanks for discussion Sam!

A must have Abby! I have carried a tin of Burt's Bee's in my pocket since I was about 13. I made sure to stock up on them before deployments and such as well. My wife is kind enough to put some in her purse to help prevent the panic which occurs when I forget mine. haha.
    Have a great week!
