I thought it was just me! I'm 29 years of age. My 7 iron with a TM burner 2.0 is about 145. I just got a AP1 716 and it about 1 club short than the Burner 2.0. I've played with them for at least three full round. It's been kind of hard to adjust. The feel on these 716 AP1's are non like other, but the distance is somewhat bothersome. Oh wells! I'll just have to adjust. I love my titleist stuff all the way!

Everyone reading this thread, keep in mind that many other manufacturers "jack up" their lofts to give the illusion that THEIR clubs are "ten yards farther than your current clubs". If you paint a "7" on your six iron, that doesn't make it 'longer'.

Compare apples to apples, and chances are, your Titleist irons are just as long as the next guys'. Check their loft specs and see if they don't line up. You also might want to have your AP1s lofts checked to make sure that they are correct to factory specs, and if not, have them bent.

MM failed to suggest having the lofts bent two degrees and that would boost the ego. Talk to your fitter about that option as well....remember golf is 90% mental.......and the other 10% is in your mind.....ha...ha...

The lofts on these clubs are what they are, as a matter of fact the 716 AP1 are jacked more than the 714 2* on the 7 iron! Looking to get "shaft fit". Hopefully the fitter would be able to do this.

Late 60's here almost like you, Naturally I always blame the arrow when it comes to something like this except when I know when I put a bad swing on my shot. Still going to see that fitter, but maybe I'll have accept goiong with a 6 iron anywhere 150+ instead of a 7!Have resisted switching shafts from steel to graphite, but maybe that's an option also. Hopefully the fitter will be ablt to tell me more.

[/quote] Walt, when I was fitted for my new 714 AP2s, they put me in XP95 steel stiff shafts. They said graphite would not give me an advantage. Speaking of the arrow, it is the shaft that drives that arrowhead. Just might need a different shaft. Guess at our age we are really fortunate. See a lot of guys in their late 60s, early and late 70s using hybrids from the 150 and very accurately and getting into my pocket. My fitter a good friend I have known for over 25 years and his shop has two Titleist certified fitters. They are always booked solid with fittings and I refer a lot of folks to them for the obvious reason.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the reply's. I think that I'm going back to a different fitter and see what he recommends or what measurements he come up with. When you hits clubs fairly straight with a good face hit and they go 1 club short, something is wrong.

Hi Ryan,

When you hit the TM PSI iron and the 716 AP2 irons, you mentioned that you the TM PSI iron was more than 15 yards longer, but did you know that the lofts are completely different? Not all 7-irons are the same, as their lofts are different. TM promises more distance because they jack up their lofts to make you hit them longer. The TM PSI 7-iron has a loft of 31.5* and the Titleist 716 AP2 7-iron has a loft of 34*. That's essentially a one club difference, and that could explain the 15-yards.

Have you tried to have your Titleist irons tweaked to the same lofts as the TM PSI irons to see if you would get the same distance?

Walt - I recently ordered the new 716 CB's (7-P), 1* strong through my home course. After receiving the clubs, I was hitting them on the range and I noticed right away the ball was ballooning, the flight was higher and my distances were way off. I ordered the clubs with the same shaft as my AP2's with standard length and lie. I was really disappointed with the clubs but new something was off. I took them to a local Golf Galaxy and had the lofts checked, not only were they not the 1* strong that I ordered, but they were 4* weaker than what they should have been. Basically one club weaker throughout. Once I had them adjusted to my current specs, I am pretty close to the same distance with my normal ball flight.

So, my advice would be to try and find a good fitter in your area and have them check the loft and lie to make sure you got what you ordered. A 1* difference in loft equates to about 3 yards in carry distance. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it all adds up in the end!

[/quote] I have not tried out the AP2 only the AP1. Did you get a boost in distance with the 716 AP1 over the 714 AP1? When I was fitted for the 714 AP1, they did have a "few" shafts, to compare with, but nothing like an assortment of different shafts that you would expect. I spoke with Team Titleist today and while they gave me suggestions on the distance loss, they mainly thought it had to do with the stronger lofts in competitor irons. My irons before my 714 AP1 were S3. The AP1 had regular shafts and had stiff and 31* loft in the 7 iron. I guess I just need to go to a GOOD fitter and see what's up.

[/quote] The irons that you tried and said you were getting greater distances. Were they the exact same lofts? Some of the other brands lofts are sometimes two to three degrees stronger per club than Titleist. AP1s run 1* stronger than AP2s.

There are so many possibilities but it sounds like my first guess first would be that your set was not properly fit to you. There are so many things to look at with todays irons related to distance, the manufactures are changing the lofts to artificially to jack up the distance numbers I see no purpose in doing this, it's just one of the gimmicks being used to make you think the club hits the ball further. In some cases thinning the face and a few other things may add a small amount of ball speed but to me they come at the expense of feel and control. I have the 716 AP2s they have what I consider normal lofts so I know they will probably play a bit shorter than some of the irons with stronger lofts. I try to have no expectation on distance I go to the range and measure how far I am hitting each club when struck pure and set my distances that way.

I would go back to fitter and go the numbers with him, if he is a good fitter he will fix them for you

I'm 5'10" with 34" wrist to floor (standard). I had my stock set of 716cb irons bent 2* flat (60* 5 iron lie)w/standard Titleist loft, using a Mitchell digital machine. I'm now hitting them longer & straighter. The last dynamic fitting was years ago for MP-irons at 1* up (60* 5 iron lie). I was shocked to see the performance gains in distance from a simple lie adjustment. The new "standard" clubs are 2* or more degrees upright from the clubs when I started playing.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the reply's. I talked to some buddies on mine who used to play Titleist and they all said kind of the same thing as we have. I used to play the 775CB and really hit those good. Well as time progresses (and age) I knew I couldn't consistently hit those as well. Well after going through Cally and CB, I decided to come back to Titleist and got the 714 AP1 when they first came out. I went to a fitter about 2 hours away (I live in a rural community), my fit was 2 up + 1 hard step. I have been struggling with these irons ever since. My handicap is now a 13 but that's primarily due to my short game. It's very hard to judge irons when I have that type of a distance gap. I realize some of that might just be me and my swing, but it's consistent through out my set. It's hard coming to a hole where you need a 150 shot, with a slight breeze behind you and come up short with a 7 iron, and you pull a six and goes over. Irons and fit are one thing, but somehow to me at least, a fit even it's off some still should provide adequate results and not be this far off.

I noticed the same thing with my 714 AP2's that I was fitted for. As it turned out, everything ended up being standard. With my TM irons I could either go with an 8 or a comfortable 7 iron from 150 yards. With the 714's, I have to pure a 7 iron to get it 150 yards. I had heard the TM's are traditionally stronger, but when I compared the specs of the two sets, on average they were all within a degree.

Walt, I struggle with buying clubs more than I do with cars/trucks. A good fitter will give you the info you need to make the right decision. It's all feel for me, but a full club worth of distance is huge!!....
