Putter Fitting

I’m a 6 handicap, and a terrible putter. I’m using a Flowback 5.5, and do pretty well with speed on longer putts, but I miss way too many inside of 5 feet, and some are pretty ugly. I have never been fit for a putter, and I think I need to start there before getting any instruction. We have a Club Champions here in town, but I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. There is also a golf shop that I have used, but they don’t have the technology that Club Champions has. Is the technology necessary, or can I get a good fit without it? I’m a bit desperate, and my wife is getting tired of hearing about my bad putting. Thanks

Club Champion makes less than 1% commission on stock shafts, and like 5x as much commission on premium upgrades. Depdending on who you get, they could be good. My experience, the guy was a baffoon and only tried to upsell me everything. When he pressured me to get a mallet, and putt me on the SAM Puttlab and it recommended me a blade. He went off about toe hang and I need 60° and mine is 45° he went looking around at all his putter and couldn't find a 60° toe hang, then just walked away didn't finish my fitting and started doing other stuff.

Putting is mostly eye hand coordination and technique... High MOI mallet is nonsense. You have to miss so far off the center for it to matter, and it's a putter, you should be striking the middle every time... If not, no putter on the planet is going to help you. Only lessons on how to not miss the face when your taking such a short slow stroke...

You just need the correct toe hang, shape, feel that fits your stroke. A putting stroke is 75% confidence and 25% everything else.
go to the store drop some balls with alignment lines drawn over them, line up your putts and see what starts on your intended line and what rolls end over end the best. Hit anything and everything... If y ou can't get any to roll consistently, it's you my friend, not your equipment. haha.

You have it wrong, you need to get instruction BEFORE you get fit for a putter. If you're struggling that bad from 5ft, 90% of the problem is you, not your putter to be honest.

I had used a Studio Stainless Centershafted Prototype for many years. Then added a TeI3 to the mix (also a blade) and putt well with them. Then was able to add the Phantom 7.5 mallet and not looking back. It just sets up so well and gives a sense of confidence.

That being said, there are times that I'll bring a blade out on the practice greens to help "center: my stroke. But I'm staying with the Phantom as my gamer.

Hi everyone just was curious if anyone else had gone back to a blade after experimenting with a phantom. I had been using a 9.2r which is beautiful putter, but I seem to have struggled with distance control and shorter putts.

Went back to my Newport 2 and had probably the best putting round I have had in a year yesterday. Needless to say I will sticking my Newport 2 for the foreseeable future, but curious if anyone else in the TT community experienced this also.

I will also throw a couple pictures on here as well ;)

I just picked up a 5.5, really wanted to try this head as a LH player. I have been using a newport 2.5 for over a decade that i love, Im sure its gonna be an experiment but I am excited. Hopefully i make everything i look at with the phantom!

Use whatever floats your boat... MOI and Forgiveness is moot.
You have to be blind as a bat with zero coordination to have any meaningful affect in MOI.
It's more about what fits your swing.

When it was released in 2018, it seemed like a facinating idea. Maintain a blade look, yet with mallet attributes. And certainly priced in the typical special release vein of products. Curious how TT feels aboutt this design, why it never took off or evolved? At one point around 2022-ish it was hard to find one in good condition for any less than $800-$900. Is there still demand for these or only in certain niche markets? Or has the explosion of so many mallet styles today simply overshadowed this unique design?

I don't think the stock headcovers are "poor", I just think the periodical custom headcovers are the best in the industry. I'm a Cameron Club member and love the annual head covers. Every now and then I get one of the "new arrival" offerings on Scotty's online shop, but you have to be quick, as they sell out fast.

The latest release in conjunction with the US Open at Shinnecock was very well received and had a cool dancing vibe with the sail boats etc on the headcover, offered in both regular blade and mallet style. Sold out very quickly and is selling for a premium on the secondary market.

Good afternoon. Does anyone have a solution for the Scotty Cameron Fastback OC putter head cover? It is very frustrating to have to battle the on and off of the of the head cover 36+ times each day you want to play golf. Scotty putters are the premium putters available. There must be a way redesign the Fastback cover before we all snap the shaft putting the head cover on and off.

Is the 26 Phantom 5.5 bendable?

I recently went and got fit into a 5.2 and fitter suggested a 68 degree lie angle with 2 degrees of loft. When I went to my local golf shop, I was able to roll the 5.5 and felt I was able to put a much smoother stroke and my start lines were a lot better compared to the 5.2. I then took it to their shop to get the lie/loft adjusted and they said they were unable to bend it due to the jet neck.

Could that just be a limitation of the shop there or is the stock 5.5 not adjustable and I'll just have to custom order it to get to the specs I was fitted into? Appreciate any insight!

Hi Noah,

This is a late response and you may have the solution already but the Phantom 5.5 is bendable and I believe that it was just a limitation of the shop. They may not have had the correct bending bar or vise for the putter. Scotty Cameron only recommends +- 2 degrees on loft and lie which your specs fit those parameters.

I have done the Golf Galaxy fitting years ago with a small sensor to detect arc and it was ok. I did a Club Champion utilizing the SAM Putt Lab System and that was a wealth of information. My experience with Club Champion was a nice one, I would advise if you went to them that you are up front at the very beginning about your expectations. In my case, "I'm not here to buy, I'm here for information and research". Quite simply, they (and other fitters) have access to technology we simply do not. I learned valuable information that was even emailed to me to keep for reference, yes, they still provided me with a quote on two separate putters, and I humored them, but I did not feel pressured to buy. I have a fitting booked at the Gallery in August and I'm pretty pumped about, I geek out on the data and sometimes just knowing where you are informationally speaking can be helpful on its own. I was hoping that the Titleist studio at Pinehurst would do putter fittings, but they were not last time I checked. I really think this has developed into a mental issue more than a physical issue. It’s almost like I’m expecting to miss short putts. I have never had nerves playing a match. No first tee jitters. I tried a few relaxation techniques on the practice green today, and that freed me up a bit.

I added weight to my Fastbacl OC and all I do now is putt better with it. No diff in the low-torque performance.

Recently purchased this Low Torque Putter, Probably the best putter to date. Question, my 34 inch came with 15 gram weights, if I change to 20 Gram Weights will it change the Low torque aspect?

Anyone Else Loving Their Fastback OC?

I used a Scotty Newport or variant for years, and I broke hearts right and left with that blade style.

A few years ago I realized I just wasn’t making as many putts as I used to. I started experimenting with center shafted putters. I went through 4 different ones, but could never feel the distance; I left putts woefully short or pathetically long. But I became pretty automatic from 5 feet and in.

When the new Fastback OC came out late last year, I grabbed one immediately. I needed to change out the weights, from 2 10s to 15 in the rear, 20 in the front. Finally, the legendary Scotty feel in a low torque putter! My handicap has dropped over 3 points since January. I honestly feel like I can make everything with this putter; that’s how confident I’ve become.

Anyone else out there feel the same?

How often do new LH models come out?

I have a Phantom 11 but I really want a centre shafted putter and Im unsure when or if we may see some new OC models.

Im really keen on a center shafted but the options are really limited.

At a 6 handicap a lesson alone probably won’t change much with your current putter. My experience a putter fitting with all the razzle-dazzle cameras are they both identify the nature of your swing and what putter characteristics help/hurt you. Besides Golf Galaxy and possibly Dick’s, Club Champion, and GolfTec, check with Cameron Studios, LAB, Evenroll, and a couple of other niche putter vendors and you may other reasonably local sites that can both fit you and offer technique changes for shorter putts to improve you.

Any chance you love on the West Coast and could get to the Cameron Gallery in Encinitas? I would go there for a fitting which is also a min lesson. You wont regret it!

Looksike velco scratch marks form the cover. THis is why I convert my SC covers to magnets
