What do I need to be aware of when cutting standard 45" Titleist 910 D2 shaft down to 44"?

Besides swing weight and stuff like that. Would the authorized titleist dealer that also builds clubs be the best bet to get this done? Anything else I need to take into account?

Swingweight (i.e. how heavy the club feels in your hand relative to the fulcrum-like gravity effect of a longer club versus a shorter club) will go down dramatically -- by 6 swingweight points using the rule-of-thumb that 1/2" equals 3 pts. Even changing the standard 7 gram weight to the heaviest 12 gram weight would only restore 2-3 of those pts.

Yes I read that in a different forum. I have a RIP 70 shaft (originally had RIP 60) so that added 1 SW point from my original setup, and I recently had my driver with the RIP 70 shaft measured at D7 (with 7 gram head weight). So if I cut an inch, I would be at D1, plus the 12 gram weight would at best bring the SW up to D3.5 or so? I like my driver SW at about a D5. So if I was to have a 44" shaft, it would have been best to order it direct from Titleist in the initial order with the shorter shaft, so that they could have potentially taken a heavier overall head and paired it with the shorter shaft? :(
  4. Hi Eric -

Just a quick note about our custom capabilities.  A RIP 70 ordered direct from Titleist at 44" (standard grip) would be D1 with the 12 gram weight.  Also, the SW scale you used may be off slightly or you might have already had the 12g weight in with the RIP 70 before.  A standard 45" RIP 70 with 7 gram weight = D4 (12g = D7).

I actually had the RIP 60 at 45" with the 7 gram weight, originally bought off the shelf. then I got the RIP 70 and put that in later, and then had this setup checked with my club builder who said the SW was D7. I was a bit surprised myself and he double checked. I'm wondering if he measured incorrectly? I don't know. In either case, even if I had ordered the RIP 70 @ 44" with the 12 gram weight, you say it would have come in at D1 anyway? Seems odd that you would have no way to raise the SW on that setup without slapping some lead tape on the back??? D1 is pretty light.

Throw on a lightweight grip and you can get a few SW points back as well.  I cut 1/2" off of my 909 D2 and used a Winn Lite grip on it and SW is pretty close to normal now I believe (I estimated it at D3 via an online estimating tool....don't have a real SW scale).

I am familiar with Winn Excel RF and Winn Lite. The Excel RF is 42g and the Winn Lite is 25g. The standard grip is 52g. The Winn Lite is for really drastic shortening (1") because it would restore 5 swingweight points. The Winn Excel would restore 2 swingweight points.

Well apparently I lucked out since my D2 with the 45" RIP 70 came in at D7.5 swingweight (with the standard red 7 gram weight insert) which as I understand is is WAY out of spec for this combination. So, when I had an inch taken off the butt to make the shaft 44", the SW only came down to D1.5 and with the 12 gram weight I can essentially bring it back up to about a D4 which works out perfectly for me. In this case, thank goodness for an out of spec club!!!
