    1. If you were in a golf tournament where the stipulation was that you could carry only 10 clubs, what would be your set makeup? 2. Have you played golf with a minimal set of clubs and what was your best score? For the purposes of the survey, could limit the choice to a par 72 regulation course, given that playing with few clubs on an exec course is not a difficult task. Of note, they have a group called "Society of Hickory Golfers", where the requirement is they play with hickory shafted golf clubs.

    Well obviously Putter, then i would say 3W driver isn't that important. skip the 5w go Hybirid. lets go with 60, 56, and 50. we'll drop the PW a good choked down 9I will do its job. i'd probably finish off  6,7,8 just to keep the scoring yardages in play. I chose this becouse most of us are playing 68,6900 yard courses. there are not many 72-7500 yard courses alot of us play on a regular baises. with that being said there arn't to many 500yd par 4's or 600yard par 5's to contend with. if i were playing a larger course i might change out a club but i would probably stay with that bag.

    Driver, 5wood, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, 56, Putter. I am fairly long with my driver, so most of the courses I play I rarely hit more than a 6 or 7. I can do with out my 60 degree wedge, and 3 wood. I also left out my 5 iron, and gap wedge. Those can be compensated for fairly easily.

    Driver, 7W, 5H, 7-9 irons, 50-54-62 and putter. I've actually played some of my best golf with this. 9 iron is 45* so no need for PW. 6 iron? - nah!; choke down 1/2" on the 5H. 3 wood no added value because I hit the 7W much better and off anything.

    Now that I got my DCI irons back online, same setup. Would be using the 50 for more bump n run shots. Option B would be my 34H, 8 iron and PW vice 7-9 (I hit the 34H as far as a 6 iron and can work it all the way down).

    Our Saturday morning group (12 players) decided to have a three club event last weekend.  We played one set of tees up from where we typically play (6,600 yds v 7,000) and I went with 3w, 5i and PW.  Ended up shooting 80, the low best-ball among the three foursomes was even-par 72, and everyone had a lot of fun.  It was great to mix it up for a week.

    Yea thats great Brice my home course hosts a four club four man scramble  tournament every year.

    What do you really need?, from my tees(next to back), I don't need driver to reach any green, so 3 or 4 wood, I'd chose 4w because because its easier to hit off the ground.

    Supposedly, and for most courses it is true, if you are close enough you can reach the back of the green, then there are 3 clubs from that spot you can hit the green.....take out the middle one, then no matter where you are you can reach the green with at least 1 club, without having to manipulate the clubs distance.

    For example, if you can hit the back of the green with 4i, then you should be able to hit the front with 6i, drop the 5i and you have about 50y you have at least 1 club you can hit somewhere on the green.

    So with that in mind, 4w, 21*h, 4,6,8,PW, LW, putter..........throw in driver and SW as luxuries.

    My first set of junior clubs was the classic combo of driver, 3W, 3, 5, 7, 9, wedge and putter. I gamed that bag for a couple of years and that is how I learned to play. These days, I might go with the even clubs instead and throw in a couple of wedges. So my 10-club set-up would be:

    Metalwoods: 910D3, 910F3
    Irons: 4, 6, 8, PW (AP2)
    Wedges:   51º, 55º & 59º (Vokey Design)
    Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio Select Kombi S

    Yeah, I second that one. I'd take out all of the Even #'s.

    I can do without the long ones, but not the short ones.  Shot frequency inside of 8i for me is just way too high and I need all of those.

    The driver thru 9 iron is almost an old school "starter" set (except 3H vs 3 iron). The golf pro at Pottawatomie Park in St Charles set me up with 1-3-4 Spalding laminated woods, Hagen 3-5-7-9 irons and a putter. $70 for the entire set with a Sunday bag in 1972. I bought a Haig Ultra Dual Wedge for $12 and kept it till 2007 (gave it to my son-in-law). Played on the Soph Golf Team with these clubs, broke 90 with them. Got a new set of 1-3-4 laminated woods from Great Lakes (with stiff shafts) and kept them until about 1988.

    I played in a 3 club tournament once and went 4, 8, putter and definitely didn't shoot 80...

    I'd go with 3w, 3h, 5i, 8i, 9i, pw',54, 58, kombi long putter....

     

    I might add driver or 7i depending on course layout and par3 distances.  i hit the 7i around 175 consistantly.

    i'd go with       5wd  5i  6i  7i  8i  9i  pw  52  56  putter   it wasnt as hard to drop clubs as i thought   .. out here in vegas  i play from around 6500 so i can get to most par5 s hitting my 5wd twice with 50-70 yard pitch    - madgolfer     swing'em hard

    I'd drop my hybrid, 5 iron, 8 iron and pitching wedge.  So I'd keep:

    910 D3

    909 F2

    4,6,7,9 irons AP1

    50, 55, 60 Vokeys

    Scotty Cameron Newport 2

    1- I would use D/5w/4i/6/7/8/PW/GW/SW/Putter     D/putter go without saying I think, then 3 wedges, and the 6/7/8 irons because those are the 3 I use most often.

    2- The last month of the season, I just carry around 4 clubs every round on my par 70 course.  I carry putter/50°/8i/4i.  It's great practice for the short game, and really great practice for course management.  I generally play about 4-6 strokes worse, but that's all.  The end of this season, I was shooting mid-70s, then with the 4 clubs I was shooting around 80.

    Just to let everybody know.... when I started playing golf in 1972 I had 1-3-4 Spalding woods, 3-5-7-9 Hagen International irons, Haig Ultra Dual Wedge (I used this bad boy up until 2007 and gave it to my son-in-law). Didn't carry the driver and could krush the 3 wood (record drive was 325 and I had a rep in the caddyshack of outdriving most of the men at the country club; I LIVED "Caddyshack" because I, like the author, caddied in Illinois at the same time). I played on the high school golf team and broke 90 a week before going into Navy boot camp in 1975 using a starter set. Didn't carry a full set of irons until 1979 (Dad handed down his X-31 irons). My full playing setup is driver-7W-4H-5H,34*H, 7-9, Vokey Spin-Milled c-c 50-54-62, Odyssey putter. 12 clubs. The driver, 4H and 7 iron are "nice to have". I use my 34H on the 135-150 yard par 3s so no need for a 6 or 7 iron (but keep the 7 in the bag). Before I got the 4H, I was choking the 7 wood to fill the gap. I do these challenges from time to time, hence the thread. Last time I played Riverwalk Friars I shot 43 with driver-7W-5H, 7-9 irons, 3 wedges and putter. I played National City (par 34 2200 yd with a 485 yard par 5) a couple years ago with 5W-28H-32H-39H-PW-SW-LW-putter and shot +3.

    I'd probably go with: 3 metal, 19* hybrid, 4/6/8/9/PW, 54*/58* and putter.

    Interestingly I found a neat article in Golf Digest yesterday about an individual that carried a Sumo SQ 7/34 hybrid and the only irons he had were a hollow-body 8 iron and his wedges. A few hotshots scoffed it but were quickly silenced when they found out he carded a 78 for 18 holes. I also read an article about an elderly gentleman who carries a driver, 3 wood, 6 iron, 9 iron and wedges, and putter. He regularly takes people's money on the golf course because he shoots 85 for 18 with this setup.

    Each year at my club, we play an event we call "3 Club".  Choose 3 clubs and play 18 holes.  I play with the 15 degree hybrid, a 7 iron, and putter.  I cannot remember my best round, but it was not too bad...

    If I was going to play with 10 clubs, I would go with:

    1) Driver

    2) 15 Degree hybrid

    3) 21 Degree hybrid

    4) 5 iron

    5) 6 iron

    6) 7 iron

    7) 8 iron

    8) PW

    9) 60 degree Lob

    10) Putter

     

    As for skipping the 9 iron, I can usually make up that yardage with the 8 - it happens to be my favorite iron and I have the best control of it...

    Todd: I can actually play with 9 clubs (could leave out the 50 and make it 8 but that is my fave wedge). I have two sets of irons (Ping Eye 2 and Titleist DCI) - I love my 8 iron to death and ditto with the DCI PW. I could take or leave either 9 iron and the 34H is much less effort vs the 6 or 7 iron (plus it is pretty workable). The below makeup consists of my favorite clubs. Driver 7W 5/26H 34H (Louisville persimmon approach hybrid - I hit it the same as a 6 iron and can work it pretty well). Also makes for a great conversation piece. Ping Eye 2 8 iron DCI PW Vokeys (50-54-62) Putter
