I think either the 716CB or AP2 would be the most comparable. Best advice though, go get fit and find out which of the current Titleist models is best for you.

Ahhh...yes....the good ole' days! The current 716 CB is 1 degree stronger than the 681 was. The swingweight for the 681 was D1 versus D2 for the 716 CB. A big difference is the tungsten in the toe/heel which is not present in the 681. The CB will be more forgiving and longer. Both are forged clubs. IMHO the 716 AP2 is nothing like either one of these club. Different feel. I believe the CB is more workable than the AP2 is but not as long as the AP2.

If you are using the oversized 981's the 716 AP1, but if your 981's are regular sized the 716 CB are the most similar clubs

I used to have the 981 and switched to 714 AP1 but didn't feel really comfortable and like a month ago I changed to the 716 CB and these are awesome!

I've never played the 981, but I saw some pictures- they're a nice clean cavity back. I play the 716 CB and they look pretty close. I love my 716 CB. Give it a try.
