Anyone here play on any of the amateur tours around?  I've joined Golfweek Charleston Amateur Tour and really looking forward to the experience.  Just wanted to get feedback from other golfers on if they have enjoyed their time on these types of tours.

No. I play invitational tournaments in the Charleston area and have gotten a number of emails about the Amateur tours to join. I recognize some of the names when the results are posted in the local Golf newspaper at the golf courses and have played against some of the tour guys in local tournaments. These tours are flighted by an accumulation of tournament scores. Think they rank you in a A, B, C, D division. I looked at some of the courses and really not interested. There is also the Low country Seniors Tour and there is a long waiting list to get on that one. You can always get a game in Charleston. Good luck on the Am tour and let us know how it works out for you. A lot of the guys enjoy it, because they get to play different courses in the area. I did play on the Charleston Interclub League and stopped because the rounds took too long to play. Five and a half to six hours became the norm and that is unacceptable. When I complained it went to deft ears. Most of the low handicap players have dropped out for that reason. Again good luck, and keep us informed.

Paul, good luck on the tour! I was watching here for responses as I will be joining the Golf Channel Am Tour this spring. The courses are great, and I look forward to a different kind of competition from my usual Sunday group. Here's to finding no sandbaggers, enjoy!

Use to play on one in Myrtle Beach years ago.  It was fun for awhile, the travel and small fields did me in.  The slow play issue can also be annoying.  But overall I thought it was a very positive experience.  If your handicap will support it I would suggest a number of CGA events a year will give you top notch competition and play some great courses.

Just joined the Golf Channel Am Tour and will be trying my first event on March 7. I really believe it will be a good experience. Good luck with your tour.
  6. Hey! I played on the Golf channel AmTour for 5 years. Once you join you can play any city in the US. It opens up your options to play different courses and play with the competition who have to follow the rules of golf. If you can travel, I recommend the bigger cities who have more people to sign up but sometimes the course will dictate how many players will sign up. I played in events in the Jacksonville area, Pensacola, FL, Birmingham and Atlanta area. I like playing different courses though but had a great time every year. The tour directors in these areas are awesome. A lot of friends to make out there too!  I'd do it again so I'd recommend it and have fun.

Paul P: There is another tour you might want to try in the Charleston area, if you happen to be a senior. The Palmetto Seniors Amateur and I bet that there a few guys in the Summerville area they are members. I think the founders play out of Legends. Check it out on the following site and see if it interests you. 2014 was it's inaugural year and I have not heard anything negative about it. I believe it is $50 to join the league/tour per year. www.psagolf.com.

I'm not a senior but thanks for that info.  I play a few of the SCGA tournaments a year and really enjoy them.  I've gotten my schedule worked out with tourneys for the am tour on Saturdays and one day SCGA tourneys on Sunday.  Alot of traveling but really looking forward to starting my path where i want to go.  Thanks for all the good lucks.  Will keep everyone posted.  Hoping for good things at kiawah Saturday

Haven't played on any Am tours, but I've certainly been thinking about the GolfWeek tour for the last year or two. Seems like it would at least be fun to get out and play different courses and meet some new people, but it just hasn't been in my budget. I'm glad you posted the question though because it's nice to read what others have experienced. Anyone do the GolfWeek Am Tour in the Ozark Region?

Finished 2nd in the Championship flight.  Shot 79 on Osprey Point.  Course was playing hard and tight but was in great shape.  Tour was serious enough for great competition but laid back enough to have a blast.  We tee it up again the 21st at Wild Dunes Harbor Course.  Should be a fun one.  Thanks for the support guys

Congratulations. The Harbor Course should be a good challenge for you. I used to be a friends member there when they offered it to those of us living east of the cooper. A little tight and if the wind is blowing can test the best. What course do you belong to in Summerville?

I belong to Summerville Country Club.  Play a lot there and pine forest with a good friend.  just wanted to be able to play tournament golf on courses i normally don't get a chance to play.  The one thing I loved about the golfweek tour is the pace of play.  We finished in 4:10.  During tournament golf, you can't expect anything better.  Can't wait to get out on the Harbor Course next week.  Looks like the weather will be great.

I just joined the golf channel AM Tour and I am looking forward to the season… I have played a few local NY/NJ tourneys the past 2 years as well as the Grey Goose world par 3 championships in Bermuda.  I really love Tournament play.

    Good luck to you!

Hey Paul, I have played on the Golfweek Am Tour for the past two years out of Columbus Ohio. I can't speak for other cities, but here in Columbus, it is overall a great experience. Our director secures a lot of private courses that I would not otherwise have the privilege of playing. As with anything...there can be cons...we regularly have over a 100 golfers playing each week which can lend itself to pretty long rounds at times. Good luck and enjoy the new people you will meet. I've been seriously thinking about playing the Golf Channel Am Tour the last couple of years.  I just have had the time to do it lately.  Looking at the website, it looks like a lot of fun.  I like that I could play a variety of courses I might not ordinarily play.  This might not be the case for all of them, but at least a few tournaments I looked at had a lower entry fee than the greens fee would be.  I'm not sure how well it works, but I like how they have a slow pace policy.  That should all but eliminate 5 1/2 or 6 hour rounds.

For those that have played, is it any different than any other smaller/local tournaments?  Do they do anything special to make it feel like a bigger deal?  Or is it just a show up and play type of thing?

I played on the PGA New England Series last year for the first time. I joined it mostly to play on courses that I'd otherwise never get to play on (like TPC Boston) but it turned out that I also really enjoyed tournament golf and the cocompetitive environment.  Provides motivation for more practice.

I also joined the Golfweek Tour in Orlando and it seems to be really well run.   The cost is way cheaper than the GolfChannel Amateur Tour which I used to play on years ago.

The same courses this year are almost 60% less on the Golfweek Tour.

Got a win using new Titleist woods (Driver / Fairway / Hybrid), wedges and V1x's.    Got a Visa gift card and a nice trophy.  More importantly the people I played with were fun and the age groups were all over the map.

Looking forward they have a "major" at Kiawah island with gets two round one of which is the Ocean course for $375.   The others tours are charging almost $700!!!!

I'll kept posting as this is my first year on this tour and we'll see how it goes.

I'll be in Kiawah for the "major".  Should be a great tourney and a huge turnout.  1 round and turtle point and 1 on the ocean course is well worth the $375.  What flight are you in?

B Flight, but I'm trying to fight my way into A.  Couple of more good tournaments should do the trick.

I have played in the Golf Channel AmTour for last 4 years.  There are some really good guys on the Tour.  The Tour Director for the Carolinas is a great guy.  Events are all over both states.  The Majors are also a lot of fun.
