We are about 6-8 weeks away from kicking off the golf season in Michigan. As I write, it is currently -8 degrees and we are under about 8 inches of snow. I finally brought my clubs up from the basement and would like to get into a practice routine so that I am comfortable with my swing when the weather breaks. I've been rolling putts all winter long but my swing has been dormant. Does anyone have advice as to how I should incorporate different clubs into my practice sessions (i.e. start with short irons/wedges, ease into mid- and long-irons and then finish with metals)? Once (if) it hits 40 degrees, I'll be out at the heated range.

I would love to hear how the TT community prepares for a new season!

    Nathanael,

So far this winter has been fairly mild here in STL, so I've been able to get out and play a quite a few times (although the bottom dropped out yesterday).  Luckily, I have a Golf Galaxy close by and I can take advantage of their "simulator" deal to hit indoors once or twice over the next couple of weeks.  Last winter was an entirely different story, so once the snow melted and the temps hit that reasonable range, I hit the range.  I started off with wedges and hit small buckets the first two or three times out just to get back into the swing motion.  Once I started to feel comfortable with my swing, then I started progressing up the ladder (short irons, mid irons, hybrids & FW's and Driver).

Whatever plan you put into practice, best of luck with it!

I split it up by the day. There's no way I could get all that done in one day. So one day is a wedge day where I'll hit shots from 130 and in; then go pick em up with the shag bag (repeat 3-4x, 60 balls each time). Next day will be mid irons. Then a few days later will be just putting and chipping around the green. I don't usually pick that "today is 7-iron day". But rather I'll work on a yardage and hit different shots for that yardage. Then for some reason I forget to work on my driver and woods for tee shots and all my hard work goes to waste!!! This year hopefully that won't be the story.

I'm from Western Massachusetts and that 6-8 weeks seems like a long time away.  Its -11 out with a few feet of snow on the ground and no relief insight.   Anyways, to answer your question, this is what I do.   I start with one of my wedges, usually an action wedge and hit a few dozen balls getting my swing into the groove.  I then switch to a seven iron and after that to a five iron and then to a five metal wood.  I do this until I feel comfortable with the progression and after all that, the one metal wood.  I do look forward to the up coming season but for now skiing is the thing with great conditions here in the east!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get some whiffle balls or those all rubber golf balls and work on your chipping and pitching. Putt. The first thing you lose in the off season is the short game. I am lucky in that I live in Arkansas and have already logged 11 rounds this year. I only play when it's above 50 degrees which includes the wind chill but I can tell you that chipping has been my main issue as for as score. Unfortunately Old Man Winter blew in over the Midwest and south this past weekend and golf is out of the question for the next week. You can bet I am practicing my chipping in the house and the balls I use do not hurt the walls or furniture.
