  1. This morning I watched the first groups go off and end the 112 year absence of golf in the olympics. What are your thoughts? The play today has been incredible so far!

    BTW, I love the first hole that is over 600+ yards long!!

    It's definitely different for some reason but I'm really, really enjoying it... Not sure if it's me but some of the players sure look like they're nervous...

    I love the course lay out as well.. Great job by Hanse

    Thanks again.

    I think that it is great to see golf in the Olympics again! I do wish though that there were a few things that occurred differently.

    1. - a team format in addition to the stroke play - the team format/match play format is a tremendous equalizer for the smaller nations (they could always have Olympic qualifying leading up to Olympics for both individuals and national teams to better manage the size of the fields);

    2. - a better schedule ... perhaps with a formal break from the PGA Tour, etc. so that the best players can have adequate rest and be better prepared to build a schedule around it;

    3. - perhaps also of important is to add "major" ranking points for the event so that it could be a factor for things such as Ryder Cup selection and/or FedEx Cup Points -- the same for the women's event.

    Anyway, just my two cents worth. Looking forward to seeing the podium presentations.

    Golf returning to the Olympics is a great thing and I applaud those players who are participating. the USA team is showing a lot of class and representing our country very well in how they are carrying themselves.

    Glad to see golf in the Olympics, but I do think the Olympics should be for amateurs, as it was intended. Just an opinion. Wrestling is the only amateur event left.

    I couldn't agree more with both of you, but it is tough when all other countries sneaks in their pro back when it was supposedly Ams only.

    Yes!!! So excited that golf is back at the Olympics! I woke up at 3:30am on the West Coast to watch the first tee :) wish USA had a better day but there is still a lot of Golf to play. Can't wait for the rest of the weekend!

    I think it is great that it is back in the Olympics. I have only seen bits and pieces so far (Friday mainly) and it didn't look like there were many spectators which is a shame.

    Definately Cool to see Olympic Golf Return!
    Would be nice to see a Team Format Built in for the next go around.
    Team USA is struggling a bit...looking forward to watching Lexi, Gerina & Stacy play.

    Cheers USA!!!

  12. I think they should somehow incorporate doing an individual format as well as a team format. I think after they get a few years of experience planning the events, it will become even better!

    Agree that all participants in Olympics should be ams. Otherwise love the Hanse design and how it plays differently in the changing weather patterns.
    Go USA!

    I agree, there should be a team format, I think it would be better and more exciting.

    I think for 2020 the Olympics should go with a Ryder cup type competition or Match Play.

    I was a little disappointed with the coverage of the golf. I don't get TSN2 so I was only able to see the last few holes on NBC

    Hey Dennis ... you're right. Unfortunately, that is part of the IOC's licensing. They even crack down on the use of clips for news and sportscasts and have extended that to the use of GIFs on Twitter and Instagram.

    Let's hope that if GC is involved as a partner/subsidiary of NBC in the 2020 games, then perhaps they can waive their right/license the use of their video clips for highlights. And, also, if national networks like TSN2 opts to not show it, then GC which is also available in other nations, should be unfiltered.

    Unless they change the entry criteria there can't be a "team" competition. Under the current criteria, the US was the only country that had four players qualify to play in the event and there was more than a few countries with only one player. The IOC and IGF can certainly change the entry criteria, the question is will they?

    Huddersfield,

    I was really sceptical about the inclusion of golf in the Olympics, but I've really enjoyed watching it. Yesterday's final round was tense stuff, and some great golf played between Rose and Stenson. Well done to Rose.
  19. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Rose/Stenson competition was great and Kuch did an outstanding job. I thought the television coverage was good too. I agree a team event would have been better but I don't see how they could have realistically done it that way. If golf sticks in the Olympics and does well perhaps we could have both individual and team events in the future. BUT, I also think Rio has been lackluster as host overall and I am excited to see how golf can do as an event in a country with a strong golf presence.

    Add me to those of you that think that the olympics should be restricted to amateurs...in all sports.

    Grindelwald,

    in my mind the Olympic Golf Event was very successful for our sport, even if the best players were not available!

    Hope that it will stay in the calendar for many more Olympics
