  1. Something that's been a big part of my journey with golf and life is living with CMT. And don't get me wrong, it could always be worse, but for a golfer this is extremely tough to deal with. Recently, country music star, Alan Jackson, revealed his CMT diagnosis. I don't follow country music but I heard he has had trouble keeping his balance on stage. Balance issues are one of the toughest aspects of having CMT, especially for someone who's passionate about Golf, as I am.

Brief Overview of CMT: it is a hereditary and a degenerative peripheral nerve disease, that affects mostly in the arms and legs. There are a wide variety of the disease progression and I consider myself lucky to be on the lesser end.

TT - do you know any Golfers with CMT? It would be great if we could share some things to help improve balance, muscle strength, etc.

I don't know anyone suffering from CMT. It's good to hear your ailment is on the lesser end of the spectrum. This is a large forum and there may be someone who can share their experience. Another option is to extend your inquiry to the the TT Facebook page.
  3. Do not. What are any additional symptoms? I have a condition called essential tremor which is not life threatening but none the less makes things challenging.

I admire your perseverance and love of the game. The game is tough enough without the additional challenges that you face. Best to you.
  5. I appreciate everyone for reading this thread and to those that have replied, My hope is that someone out there, a young golfer that has CMT, will see this and can benefit from this conversation.

@TUser - I have difficulty walking, having to carry my own bag would be extremely difficult. Both of my feet have high arches, drop foot, and weak ankles.

I use KT tape, in bulk, to stabilize both of my ankles. There are other options, sleeves, braces, etc., but KT tape works best for me. Loss of muscle in my legs and arms means I am always doing toe raises, pushups, and working on core strength. The progression for me was minimal as a kid. I once walked 54 holes in 1 day.

Casey Martin is my favorite golfer. Cheers to Casey for blazing the trail for the ability to use a cart in competition! #TT
  6. Prayers for Casey Martin, I just mentioned him in my last comment and today I heard he had his right leg amputated.

Our two diseases/syndromes are different and unrelated but I will always consider him to be my golfing hero. Casey's ultimate triumph at the Supreme Court in 2001 was a historic moment for golfers with disabilities. Cheers again to Casey, and prayers for a speedy recovery. #TT

I dont know any professional golfers with CMT. I've been playing golf since 9yrs old, i picked up the game when i was diagnosed with cmt since doctors told me i couldnt play basketball, baseball or football. doctors laughed when i told them i wanted to play golf and that just made me want to prove them all wrong. Had the triple orthodesis surgery on both feet/ankles when i was 12yrs old. I'm 42 now and was still playing til recently. Calcium deposits , tendons , nueropathy pain and achilles issues are happening now but hopefully i'll be able to golf again soon. I feel pretty fortunate to at lease gotten to play for over 30 years. balance has always been tough but after practicing you learn how to swing how you can. very proud of my 6 hcp but now with these latest challenges i'm finding it hard to break 90...last year i broke 80's regularly and even shot 1 under but times they are a changing....play while you can and just love the game as much as possible. best sport on earth.

wclark, thanks for digging up this post from a couple years ago. It is always interesting to hear some of the tribulations our fellow golfers go through, just for the love of the game. So glad to hear you're managing day to day, and for providing us a good reminder of how lucky we all are to just get out there and play.
    Welcome to the TT Forum!!!
  9. Certainly an inspiration to people

Makes you think how lucky you are if you are fit and well

People moan when they make a bad shot etc but in reality they should think how lucky they are to be able to play this great game
  10. Hey Josh,

Just seeing this now thanks to a few people bumping it up.

I am also playing with CMT - Hands and ankles get a little weaker each year.

I don't have any secrets though... just basic strength work.

My left leg is significantly worse than my right leg so I have a tendency to despise a downhill lie... lots of arms-only punch shots in that situation so I don't roll down the hill.

In the last couple of years I've made it a huge point to take any golf trip that I want to, I make it work in any way I can because who knows how long I'll be able to keep going.

This includes trips to Mesquite, Bandon, TTI Pinehurst, TTI Casa De Campo, TTI Streamsong, and the upcoming TTI TPC Scottsdale... hopefully many more to come!
