Clear sunny and 40 will work for me as I live near the ocean so typically there is not much snow. Last winter I got in 29 rounds in Massachusetts!

I'll have to change that a little played the other day in 36 degrees with a north wind wasn't bad but had 6 layers on1 Used hand warmers which does make it more comfortable.

Live in northern MA, play in NH. If the course is open, I'm usually good to go, unless it's pouring rain. I'm well equipped to stay warm and hand-warmers are critical.

My home course Atkinson CC will usually close down before I'm ready. A few years back I managed to play at Merrimack GC in Methuen, MA on Dec. 10th - the 1st and only time I ever got to play on my birthday!

I am in michigan and my cut off would be when the wind is blowing 20 to 30 mph and is under 50* i will play when it is in the 40s as long as the wind is ripping > i have a cart cover and a heater <it does wonders for cold weather golf, but when the ball sounds like your hitting a molitor or top rock i pretty much am done..

As age increases, so has my temperature minimums it seems. I had the convertible scale listed earlier, but I went out both days this weekend, and I have to amend it. I think my bare minimum temperature to enjoy playing is 45 degrees. Saturday, it was 40... My hands were numb from vibration for an hour or so afterwards and spent as much time wiping my nose as hitting the ball. Sunday was 45... No problems at all. Still lower than my age, so I'll take it !!!

Same question came up during a round with some guys from the UK this past week -- their perspective was bad weather will never stop them from playing; only bad/inappropriate golfing gear.

While it is most likely true that UK golfers are better in poor conditions than US golfers, it is all about perspective. Their weather is miserable year round, Nikhil. Be a good bad weather golfer or enjoy the wonderful weather we enjoy? Would your preference be Scarborough or Myrtle Beach? Personally, I choose Texas Hill country over all others. Rain, rain, go away. Come back again some other day!

45 F. 40 if there is no wind and sunny.

Nikhil brings up a great point.  The technology of cold weather and rain apparel has made it easier to tolerate extreme conditions.

Once upon a time, I had to dress like the Michelin man to be comfortable in anything below 40.  Now I play whenever I can swing comfortably and enjoy myself.  I lose all of my buddies, though, when it hits 55.

Playing in NE I've learned to make the best of it, as long as it in the 30's and not raining - game on. The season's too short not to at least get out on a sunny but chilly day. Dress warm and get some exercise. Ball doesn't fly as far but the roll is like playing in Scotland. Good prep if your making a trip across the pond in the spring.

For me the windchill above 40 and I am good to go. No go in the rain.

I'll play in the 30's, no problem.  Cloud cover, wind, and rain are the only real issues.  I like to walk, and the newer cold weather base layers are so good that it's easy to overdress.

Hey guys. Don't want this to sound like a brag, but in another life ... I played every month of the year in the Pittsburgh area. One Saturday morning, my group bought all the orange golf balls in the golf shop. The orange color did not help a bit when the ball disappeared into a three-foot deep snow bank. I and my Texas truck also jump started every car in my neighborhood one twenty below morning long ago. I have lain in two-foot deep snow in Ohio putting snow chains on my rear tires. Once took me eight hours to drive 200 miles across Ohio in a snow storm. I can and have played in just about every bad weather condition there is except during blinding freezing snow storms. The fact is - I returned home to North Texas and now? I don't have to play in those miserable conditions ... my choice, thank you very much! Here in North Texas, if you don't like the weather - wait a minute ... it'll change.

Here in south-central Michigan my cold weather golf limit is 35 degrees with lots of sun and no wind.  If the wind is up and there are clouds then it need to be at least 48 degrees.  If there is light rain and wind then it needs to be at least 55 degrees. Even though there is light snow falling to day, the weather prediction for Sunday is 51 degrees and light winds, I will be on the course.

I try to play all year round. I do not play in a three club wind or raining. Our group plays in 30 degree weather as long as there is no wind.

Down to about 35 - have played in snow, rain and stiff wind. If course is open with these conditions, I'm good to go.

With the colder weather starting to settle in, I wonder how many of us are beginning to question our weather cutoff line.  Looking at the upcoming weekend, with a low of 38 and high of 56 on Friday golf will definitely be in the forecast here in Dallas.  On Saturday, with a low of 30 and high of 40 with 50% chance of rain, it is looking sketchy at this point to say the least.  As I am typing this, I am thinking to myself that if it is not raining on Saturday, there is a pretty good chance that I will be out there playing, that's how we roll this time of year!

I don't mind playing in cold weather as long as the wind is down. Lite rain or snow showers no problem. Being from Wisconsin the people in South Carolina think I'm nuts when it 40 and I'm out playing.

I'm pretty much like you although I would be willing to play in slightly colder temps if it weren't for the fact that I have eczema and my skin just can't take it. It's never too hot for me though. I can tell you that. Just load up with plenty of water, some snacks, and I'm good.

  31. I am from Florida and prefer the hot weather. However, living in the Northeast now and any excuse to get out is good by me. That's why we have all these jackets and sweaters that we buy at all these proshops!! Put it on and get out there!!

I will play at 40 with almost no wind or 50 if theres lots of wind. If it get to 40 with no wind and sunny it feels just fine to play with a long sleeve T under a golf shirt. When its 50 and windy with no sun it feels cold with under armor base layer long sleeve T and a golf shirt. All with golf cart but no cover because I dont have one hehe

I think anyone who has a "cut off line" should spend a year where they get a real winter. When you're couped up shoveling snow for 3+ months you might rethink your concept of good weather. I played just before this colossal snow storm in 30*. It wasn't great, but it's better than nothing. It was so cold the ball bounced like a super ball on the greens and the pins were frozen. I wore some good FJ layers and enjoyed the heck out of myself.

Luckily for me, I live in San Diego if there's no frost on the greens we play. I draw the line at just over one hundred degrees, any warmer and it's Cuba Libre time and a cool lounge.

  35. Louis M

Here in south central Texas we don't have but a few weeks of bad cold weather and usually we have some parts of the day it gets nice enough to play. I don't play weekends, leave those days for people that have to work.
  36. Dave E

    Dave E

Carl , I draw the line at 40 degrees.  Any cooler than that, and it becomes difficult to concentrate on the game, because I am cold and thinking about playing very fast instead of taking those extra few seconds to settle myself and commit to a shot.  So, minimum temp 40.  Dave.

Here in the Northeast as long as the wind isn't blowing and the ground is not snow covered  we'll play!  Played a week ago Friday with temps in the high 20's when we started after an hour and a half frost delay! Lotta roll off the tee but par 3's and approach shots to the green can be an adventure.
